2019-20 Annual Report

At Osler, when it comes to going beyond for healthier communities we're not afraid to push boundaries. And in 2019-20 we pushed a lot of boundaries – forging partnerships, expanding our footprint, and redefining courage and compassion in the face of COVID-19. This year's Annual Report captures a year to remember and shows that our commitment to patient-inspired health care knows no limits.

A message from Osler’s President & CEO and Board Chair

2019-20 has been an extraordinary year on many fronts, one where we have pushed the boundaries as an organization and as a health system partner to continue to deliver safe, quality patient-inspired care.

This marked the first year of implementing Osler’s 2019-24 Corporate Strategic Plan, Going Beyond for Healthier Communities - our blueprint for a sustainable future that challenges us to think differently about the way we provide care. We launched a number of foundational initiatives that will serve us well over the course of our five-year plan with a particular focus on supporting a healthy workforce, enhancing quality excellence in patient care, and further advancing patient and family engagement.

the development of the Brampton/Etobicoke Ontario Health Team (OHT), one of the largest in the province with its 186 members, and among the first to be approved. Although still in its infancy, it served us well in helping to address the needs of patients across the region as we closed out the year facing the global COVID-19 pandemic.

While these uncertain times may shift or accelerate the initiatives in our Strategic Plan and our approaches to care in the future, what remains a constant at Osler is the courage, determination, perseverance and commitment of Osler staff, physicians, volunteers, board members, community partners, donors, patients and families. It’s this collective ability to push the boundaries personally and professionally that will see us through this public health crisis together in 2020-21 and beyond.

A message from Osler’s Clinical Leadership

As evidenced by the many stories featured in this year’s Annual Report, our teams went above and beyond to consistently deliver safe, quality patient care to everyone who came through our doors in 2019-20.

Quality is a key strategic priority in our 2019-24 Strategic Plan, Going Beyond for Healthier Communities, and was at the forefront of everything we did in a year characterized by the opening of new facilities and services, and the adoption of new approaches to care. The openings of the new patient tower at Etobicoke General Hospital and Osler’s Reactivation Care Centre are just two examples of how Osler is pushing the envelope on quality excellence in patient care.

With a focus on delivering safe, compassionate, high quality care every time, the efforts of Osler teams did not go unnoticed. Etobicoke General Hospital was ranked as one of North America’s top hospitals for safety and quality for its successful efforts to reduce clinical complications related to surgeries. Osler also became the first community hospital in Canada to receive a prestigious international designation for our collaborative approach to caring for patients with cancer.

Much of our year was also devoted to preparations for our Accreditation Canada survey, originally scheduled for October 2020, but now postponed until further notice due to COVID-19. Accreditation allows us to evaluate the quality of our services against globally recognized standards of quality excellence. With COVID-19 taking centre stage towards the end of 2019-20, we are confident that our teams’ unwavering commitment to quality and safety will continue to play a key role in our ability to keep our people, our patients and our communities safe.
